Originally, there was no registry for these
beautiful COLORED draft horses. These horses have been around
for along time here in the United States, and can be traced
back to the 20's. The old timers called them "SPOTS". The Pinto
drafts have dated back to the medieval times where they were
used as War Horses. Queen Elizabeth has had Pinto draft horses
at the Queen's court in her breeding program, and has used them
in parades to hold the Hugh drums. Galway Warrior, a Gypsy Drum
Horse standing 17 hands, was one of her horses and now resides
at Black Forest Shires in Colorado where he stands at stud along
with another Gypsy Vanner stallion. Back in the 20's and 30's
these horses were used for farming, and as with the other draft
breeds became fewer and fewer as the tractor took over farming.
In 1977 Lowell and Gayle Clark bought a team of black tobiano
16.3 draft horses that were used in pulling contests
in CO and NM. This team, Dick and Jane, were winners and drew
interest in the color with questions as to where the color came
from. This team was traced back to Lynn Roller of IA. He said
that at one time he had up to 20 teams of pinto drafts. This
team's sire was a black Percheron stallion owned by Arnold Hexom
who had some of the finest Percheron horses in the country.
He told the Clark's that this team were 1/2 brother and sister.
Their dam's were a 16.2 to 16.3 hand black tobaino mares, and
were bred to what he said he thought was one of his best Percheron
stallions he owned at that time.
In 1980 the Clark's bought a 7 month old stallion from Howard
Johnston's draft horse auction in Topeka, KS. That was Pecos
Chief. In 1984 Jane died in foal to Pecos Chief with his first
foal. She was 19 years old.
With the pulling and showing of Dick, Jane and Pecos Chief
in CO. where they were shown at many Fairs and the biggest
show was the Denver National Stock Show, they drew great interest.
Always the big question was "when will there be a registry
for these beautiful horses". The Pinto Draft Registry Inc.
was started by Gayle Clark in 2002.
